Theres a common misconception in the media, and sectors of the public, that trans people, particularly trans women, are only transitioning to gain access to women’s bathrooms for the purposes of committing crime.

So, I’ve been doing some research about what the trans gender crime rate in bathrooms is compared to the crime commited by cis gender people per capita of population. This is a long read, so make a brew and make yourself comfy.

The question, Crime rate statistics for trans people using bathroom of their aligned gender

It is important to address the premise of the question, what are the crime rate statistics for trans people using the bathroom of their aligned gender, as it is based on a harmful misconception.

I have done a lot of research and the articles I found online show that the consensus of governmental, law enforcement agencies and advocacy groups show no evidence of increased safety risks for cisgender people when sharing bathrooms with transgender individuals aligning with their gender identity. In fact, the data indicates the opposite!

Key findings

Lack of evidence for increased studies show no link between trans-inclusive bathroom policies and an increase in crime within these spaces. Links below.

Nondiscrimination laws have been in place for extended periods, both in the UK and worldwide, without a rise in public safety incidents in restrooms or locker rooms.

An increased risk for transgender individuals has been shown that transgender people are disproportionately more likely to experience harassment, verbal abuse, physical assault, and sexual assault when using public restrooms. This is when they use the bathroom of their aligned gender.

This risk is greatly increased when they are forced to use facilities that do not align with their gender identity.

A significant percentage of transgender individuals report being denied access to restrooms, facing verbal harassment as well as being denied, and even physical or sexual assault while trying to use or while using toilets aligned with their gender, and more so when using bathrooms of their non aligned gender.

Studies also show that restricting transgender students’ access to bathrooms aligning with their gender identity has been associated with higher rates of verbal, physical and sexual assault against them.

This is also true of binary people who neither align with male or female genders.

Statistics that transgender individuals, as victims of crime, show that transgender people are significantly more likely to be victims of violent crime compared to cisgender individuals.

This is true in all spaces not just bathrooms.

One study has found that transgender individuals were over four times more likely to experience violent victimization or assault, both verbal and physical, than cisgender people.

In some countries this is much higher and the murder rate of trans gender people is show to be higher in those countries. Particularly, South America.

Both transgender men and women experience higher rates of violent victimization than their cisgender counterparts.

Households with a transgender person also report higher rates of property victimization. This statistics also shows that the crime rate on siblings is higher in this category.

Focusing on real issues, such as law enforcement and sexual assault advocates in areas with trans-inclusive policies consistently state that bathroom bans do not enhance safety. For cis gender people or trans people.

It’s worth emphasising that harming anyone in a public restroom is already illegal.

I could not find any per capita crime rates showing any crime rates comparing transgender individuals as perpetrators versus cisgender individuals in bathrooms. They are not collected or not available, likely because the data does not support the premise of transgender individuals being a significant threat in these spaces.

However, data on victimisation reveals a stark disparity and that transgender individuals experience violent victimization at a rate of 86.2 per 1,000 people, compared to 21.7 per 1,000 people for cisgender individuals. This is a worldwide figure.

Conclusion

Any focus should be on the safety and well-being of all individuals. ALL INDIVIDUALS, not just transgender individuals.

Policies that restrict bathroom access for transgender people do not enhance safety for cisgender individuals and, in fact, increase the risk of harm for transgender people. The safety of all is paramount.

A ban on bathroom use for trans gender people will also harm cis gender people who may not fit the stereotypical gender conformity, or have features which do not align with their chosen bathroom. This is going to cause issues for those people when others wave their opinions about!

The available evidence indicates that transgender individuals are far more likely to be victims of crime, in public restrooms, than perpetrators.

UK based information

While specific UK-based statistics aren’t available directly, comparing crime rates of transgender individuals in bathrooms vs cisgender individuals, the general trends and findings align with the information provided above.

Here are some of the links to websites I’ve found that offer related information and UK-specific data:

Stop Hate UK

This organisation provides information and support regarding hate crimes, including those targeting transgender people. Their website includes statistics and reports on the prevalence of transgender hate crimes in the UK.

https://www.stophateuk.org/about-hate-crime/transgender-hate/

GOV.UK (Government Statistics)

The official UK government website publishes statistics on various aspects of crime, including hate crimes.

While specific data on transgender individuals as perpetrators in bathrooms is unlikely, I found a few reports on hate crimes motivated by transgender identity.

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/hate-crime-england-and-wales-year-ending-march-2024/hate-crime-england-and-wales-year-ending-march-2024

(This report provides broader crime statistics by sex, which can be useful context.)

(This provides data on victimisation based on sexual orientation and sex, which can offer some related insights.)

West Yorkshire Police

(Information via a freedom of information request)

This response to a Freedom of Information request provides data on recorded transgender hate crimes in the West Yorkshire area.

While geographically specific, it highlights the focus of law enforcement on crimes against transgender people.

https://www.westyorkshire.police.uk/freedom-of-information/february-2025-foi-2366406-25-transgender-hate-crimes

Galop

This organisation specialises in supporting LGBT+ victims of crime.

Their website contains statements and information related to the safety and rights of transgender individuals, including concerning bathroom access.

https://galop.org.uk/news/galops-statement-in-response-to-the-governments-plans-to-halt-the-march-of-gender-neutral-toilets/

UK Parliament Committees

The link below provides written evidence submitted to parliamentary committees, which includes data and analysis on the offending rates of transgender individuals in the UK prison population.

It’s important to note that this focuses on those within the criminal justice system and not specifically bathroom-related crime.

https://committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/18973/pdf/

Key information from these UK-based resources

Hate crimes against transgender people are a documented issue in the UK, and these are increasing in some areas and are bound to get worse due to the Supreme court Vs transgender people ruling in April 2025.

The focus of concern and data collection in this document is primarily on the victimisation of transgender individuals, not their perpetration of crimes in bathrooms.

There is an ongoing discussion in the UK regarding bathroom access for transgender individuals, often framed around safety and inclusivity.

Organisations like Galop highlight the fear and risk faced by transgender people when using public restrooms.

Government statistics on crime generally focus on sex (male/female) and are beginning to include data on hate crimes based on transgender individuals.

In general it’s crucial to remember that the lack of data supporting the idea of transgender people being a significant threat in bathrooms in the UK mirrors the findings globally.

The real issue is the safety and well-being of transgender individuals who face disproportionate risks in public spaces.

Again,. I will say that I am in not saying women should not be safe in single sex spaces. Quite the contrary, that Trans Women are not the issue here.

Yes, I know I’m transgender and some people might not understand or grasp what’s happened in my life to get me to where I am today.

And, let me be brutally honest, I’m not asking or expecting people to accept me or understand my life or who I am anyway!

Live and let live is my motto.

Today, I’ve been to a small independent museum within a village in rural Wales and the reaction from a few of the locals was bizarre but not bad!

So we, Lilly Jae and I, walk into this place, hand in hand, and the experience we went through has stunned us both.

We have talked about this after we left and we’re shocked, firstly because the conversation was polite, but ultimately intrusive from someone who was probably a very conservative rural Welsh villager!

Upon entry, we were greeted by the elderly male proprietor and it was here the questions began. Some about both our genders, sexuality and later leading into sex changing.

He was clearly confused as to which of us were which sex, and how our dynamic worked as a couple, he swiftly took to pointing out how we “girls” should look at their information section on “how to look after men” which was said joking but also felt underhandedly condescending. Lilly quickly smiled and said “oh that’s fine, thank you, we don’t need to know this as we look after each other just fine. So, thank you.”

It was this polite manor that we maintained throughout the encounter that maybe bought the elderly man to realise quickly that he was digging himself a hole. A hole which he kept digging, but it wasn’t being done in a malicious or nasty way just more a generational blind side to LGBTQ couples and this soon turned into a fascination of some sorts.

He followed us around the museum making conversation and offered us tea on the house. This felt like a peace offering and was added to about the museums new display of information regarding being homosexual in the past. We wondered about the museum, and every now and then he would ask if we had been up to the homosexual area to view the materials.

To which we laughed this off and said, “we’re happy with each other, thank you very much” and hugged each other.

We wandered off and later one of the men came over to us, obviously intrigued, but he must have had some kind of preconceived idea about trans people or lesbians in general, and I don’t think he could truly work out if we were lesbians or one or both of us was transgender.

By this time he was quite nervous but we kind of laughed it off and went on our merry way but are shocked at the level of sub conscious ignorance out there.

We have talked about it and we aren’t angry about this but we are mainly stunned that there is a level of generational ignorance about the LGBTQ+ community.

Especially when the museum has a section on LGBTQ+ and transgender history.

I’ve been having many conversations with my friends over the past couple of weeks about “The great British Toilet versus Transgender debate” and the rights the government’s plans to change the law to define gender and how we as British people use the toilet!

The UK Government, or more precisely the Tory party, are pursuing a change to the Gender Equality Act of 2010 to make Women only spaces safer. IE: Toilets

This is what the government want to do, quotes from this article: What would changing the Equality Act mean for trans people and single-sex spaces? | Equality Act 2010 | The Guardian

“What would changing the Equality Act mean for trans people and single-sex spaces?
Kemi Badenoch (the current Secretary of State for the Department for Business and Trade, October 2023) is considering amending the act to define people’s sex as biological sex in England, Scotland and Wales

A controversial attempt to overhaul one of the hallmark pieces of equalities law is being considered by ministers.

As they prepare to press ahead with a lengthy and convoluted process, we examine what the reforms would mean for trans people and those advocating for sex-based rights, as well as the motivations behind the move.

What do ministers want to do?
A significant change to the 2010 Equality Act is being pursued by the government, which would redefine “sex” to refer specifically to a person’s sex at birth. That would be designed to make it legal for those who are transgender to be banned from single-sex spaces and events, such as book groups and hospital wards.”

So, what’s going to happen with bathrooms?

The Government want to ban trans people from the bathroom of their chosen gender. I’ll come on to why this is going to fall flat on its backside in a moment.

On discussions with groups of friends over the summer, the general consensus of these friends is that, if this government do actually manage to change the law it’s going to make it harder for them as cisgender people to go about their normal lives.

Not just into bathrooms either, however many are concerned about this, because they see this as an infringement on their rights to vilify a small section of the community. But they also see that changing rooms in shops and other public single sex space will also be effected as well.

The question I am being asked a lot in these conversation is, just how many trans people exist? As well as how this is actually offending anyone using the bathrooms?

When they are presented with the true figures, not those in the Daily Fail, they begin to understand that trans people are not a danger to them in the bathroom.

For those that don’t know the number of Transgender people living in the UK is roughly 262,000 people (male to female, female to male and non-binary), out of a population of 67.33 million. This equates to about 0.34% of the UK population. Your unlikely to meet a Trans person in your daily life!

Quite a few of them were also concerned about how many places are converting their toilets into shared spaces instead of single sex toilets, but understand that this is ultimately because any change in the law will make the venue responsible for policing these policies! IE: if the government manage to change the law then the bar/restaurant owner will be the one responsible for policing these changes and most don’t want that responsibility or perceived hassle around this!

While many of my female friends understand that shared bathrooms are actually safer, mainly because legislation is such that things like CCTV can actually be installed is shared bathrooms, buy they also feel that because they’re rights have been infringed that shared bathrooms have been forced on them.

They’re not angry at the trans community for this, but are angry at the government for proposing/trying to changing the law.

They also think that trans people are being demonized.

Even the elderly people I’ve talked to (65+), some of which are pro trans and conservative voters, have said that they think the government is wrong in pursuing this matter. There are also others who think the opposite and I also value their opinions.

They’re also concerned at the media and governmental bias of anti-trans rhetoric, especially when the Trans population is so small.

When asked if they have a problem with me as a transgender woman, all of them back me up!

They do not see an issue with me, their Transgender friend, using the bathroom at the same time as them, in shared or single space bathrooms.

Will genetic women be questioned, or possibly denied access to the woman’s bathrooms

One of the biggest concerns of the women I have spoken to, and this has been at great length on this subject, isn’t that they are sharing the bathroom with a trans woman is that if the government pushes through a change in the law then, where will the line be drawn and how will it effect them?

Will they be asked if they are “eligible” to use the female bathroom?

What if you’re a slightly masculine woman, will they be challenged?

What if you have features which aren’t deemed feminine, will they be challenged?

Will these women be asked their Gender Identity? How will they prove this?

Documents aren’t reliable as means of gender confirmation and also don’t reflect birth gender, so how will anyone prove their birth gender?

Will you have to have a DNA test before using the bathroom in your local pub?

Will public bathrooms be advertising for the new position of Genital Inspector? If so, then surely this is an infringement on people’s human/civil rights!

Will the premises they are using have bathroom bouncers?

How will any change in policy be policed?

I have friends and acquaintances who aren’t a perfect size 8, will they be asked in about gender before they get to pee?

If you’re not a tory housewife, will you be allowed to pee?

Will there be an increase in verbal/physical abuse from other women because you don’t meet the criteria above or look like a stereotypical norm?

Of course these won’t happen, but this question’s beg to be answered.

The thing that the Conservatives seem to not understand is that in the current system Trans Women can go into the woman’s toilets and most trans women look like women.

If you force people to use the toilets of their birth gender then trans men will be forced to use the woman’s toilets, then how will you be able to tell the trans men from real men? I know some of you reading this will say “Well, how do you tell the trans women from sex offenders dressed as women”.

Look, as a woman in the woman’s toilet you are more likely to be attacked by another woman than a trans woman!

The crime statistics back this up and more of this can be found in my transgender myths vs reality page and see the links below.

If you force trans men to use the women’s toilet then you are actually making the situation worse because cisgender men will be able to use the women’s toilets easier and all they have to say is “I’m a trans man”!

What about those with a Gender Recognition Certificate?

I’ve been asked this a few times, “Well, you’ll just get a Gender Recognition Certificate won’t you?”

If you read the Daily Fail then you’ll believe that Gender Recognition Certificates (GRC) are easier to get than potted meat at your local supermarket!

Really? Think again!

Once I’ve told the very same people what’s involved in getting a GRC they have been absolutely shocked at how hard it is to get a gender recognition certificate for a gender change.

Most think you just fill a form in online and that’s it, but once they are given the information, they are also shocked at how hard it is. People think its easy because the media has portrayed the GRC as a 10 second document swap.

When in reality the process takes many years, requires a medical diagnosis, involves many professional people and then a decision by a board of doctors. Only when this has been completed can you apply for a GRC.

Just the waiting list to see the Gender Specialist can take 5 years.

This 5 year wait is for the first appointment!

Not to get treatment, not to get hormones, not to get gender affirming care and absolutely not to get a gender recognition certificate. The GRC is the last thing you’ll be able to get on a journey which involves lots of time, effort, speaking to medical professionals and surgeries.

Those I’ve spoken to were also very shocked when they’ve been told about the issues that I’ve had just trying to get my doctor to give me basic mental health help.

The last time I went out with for dinner with a group of female friends, I took one of my other trans friends with me, and when she told them about the problems that she’d have they were even more shocked because they weren’t just getting the opinion of one person or the actions of one doctors surgery.

Some might say, “Good its hard, to put people off, or give them time to rethink their decision”, but its difficult for other reasons. One of them being that the medical system is routed in the mid 20th century. Much of the NHS treatment/legislation for Transgender patients in the UK was written in the 1970’s and 80’s.

Conclusion. What’s going to happen? What’s already happening!

The commentary by the Conservative Party, Prime Minister and other MP’s has also lead to an increase in the media and online social media hate towards the Transgender community and misinformation and hate has increased around the whole bathroom issue.

Misinformation is rife on this subject and this is only set to get worse because the same old BS is repeated in the media and online again and again and people are unwilling or unable to educate themselves on such matters.

If we continue to have a Tory government they will forge ahead regardless, this is what they believe in, and after the Tory party conference in 2023, this was laid clear for all to see on what Rishi Sunak and the party stance was on transgender people. How they clapped at Rishi Sunak’s comments like performing seals!

If a change is made to the Equality Act of 2010 which forces Trans people to use the bathrooms of their assigned gender at birth then this situation will get worse, not better!

Not just for Transgender people, but everyone!

This is already happening as the number of women being abused in toilets by other women, because of transphobia is on the increase. The articles below are about women, and transwomen, being insulted and attacked by other women because they either don’t meet their perfect 10, or had attributes the other women considered male! If the law is changed then this is only going to get worse!

I have also found a number of studies, most are in the USA, as their becoming Transphobic central, about the myth that transgender women are a danger to other women in bathrooms.

Is being transgender, the new social pariah?

I’ve been mulling over this idea now for a couple of months. As I’m seeing it more and more on the news and I’ve had a number of conversations about this with friends and colleagues.

I see that the transgender community is definitely becoming more and more the new social pariah.

This is becoming more prevalent in countries like the UK and USA where being transgender will get you beaten, stabbed and even shot just for existing and walking down the street.

While countries like Brazil, have a transgender murder rate so high, with over 4,000 trans people having been killed in the past 13 years.

I myself have been subject to hate and abuse going about my daily life, for the first time in Manchester in August of this year.

A number of my transgender friends have also been subjected to similar kinds of comments, abuse, and physical assault (which were reported to the police but dropped because of lack of evidence!)

This year we had the Brianna Ghey murder, here in the UK and this really hit home hard at the kind of abuse.

Abuse which now puts the UK on the world leaderboard for transgender murders.

Then when the media writes about abuse or murders their rhetoric is incredibly negative and dare I say it offensive and even harmful. People’s views are then formed on these views as unfortunately many citizens still think the media is the truth and nothing but the truth.

I won’t go over again what happened with Brianna Ghey, but the media spent the hours after her death deadnaming and trying to dig up dirt on the girl to discredit her as a Transwoman!

Back to the Past!

At one time in the not-so-distant past in the UK other minorities were vilified for their culture and behavior but society has moved on and these minorities don’t experience this in general anymore because society has evolved and anti-discrimination laws have been put in place.

But there was a time when the ethnic, Black and Asian minorities where called certain names just because of their skin colour or ethnicity.

Those very words will now get you arrested for hate crimes, and quite rightly so.

But those very same rules do not seem to apply to transgender people and I’d say since 2020 they have got worse.

Sure I could report people who call me certain names but the Police are absolutely useless and despite reporting assaults in the past have done nothing.

Even a sexual assault went nowhere.

Our political class aren’t helping matters and the Conservative Party government, currently in power in the UK, is very anti transgender and supported by certain media outlets means misinformation and abuse toward transgender people are on the increase.

I find myself being asked about, or even told, that after reading an article in the Daily Fail, that certain aspects of my life, sexuality, beliefs, and transition are wrong or false!

This is usually said to me in a detrimental way.

The governmental Anti Transgender agenda

In the past week, 6th October 2023, at the Tory party conference the government and Rishi Sunak have again shown their true colours as an anti trans party and spoken out against the trans community.

My response to the Tory party speech is here.

This of course, in their eyes, is not anti transgender but “common sense” but the thinly veiled bullshit will no doubt fuel the anti trans movement and I would expect hate crimes against trans people to rise because of the government’s stance on transgender people?

The problem with a government which pushes an anti trans agenda is that the plebs and transphobes will see this as “it’s okay” because the government are behind them.

This of course is a sad state of affairs, for not just trans people, but is also anti LGBTQI+!

This agenda also does not bode well for women and men who do not conform to societies less than perfect example of what a man and woman are. I would expect attacks on masculine women and feminine men to increase as well.

Summary

So, is being transgender the new social pariah?

Is this social pariahadom only for the Male to Female transgender community?

Or is society’s scorn aimed at all transgender people, young and old, rich or poor, fat or thin, male or female?

When I set out on my journey 4 years ago, I was quite happy to try to get on with my life, but the more society pushes, the harder I push back.

I and many more of my transgender friends don’t want to be treated differently because of who we are, all we want is to get on with our lives, live our lives, and not be subject to society’s scorn and abuse.

Let me ask you a question, if you wouldn’t say the things you deem safe to say to any other group in society, why do you feel safe saying them to a transgender person?

I mean you wouldn’t call and black person the N word and expect not to face repercussions, so don’t call me things and I won’t unfurl my scorn and hatred back at you!

Everyone has the right to live their lives as they see fit.

Trans people face enough mistreatment and hate from the medical, governmental, and institutions, and getting it from society also leads to depression, anxiety, and in extreme cases death from suicide.

Don’t believe me, attend the transgender memorial vigil in Sackville gardens in November. A great number of people who were mentioned last year killed themselves because they couldn’t live with the abuse and torment aimed at them!

Also a great deal of trans people were murdered because of the anti trans movement in other countries.

I just want to live my life and those who have known me for a very long time have all said that since I came out I am a much happier and pleasant person.

However I fear things will get worse for the Transgender community before they get better!

After the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak’s party conference speech this week, 4th October 2023, saying that misgender transgender people is ‘common sense’, I find myself feeling unsafe in my own country for the first time in my life.

Pink News: Rishi Sunak says misgendering trans people is ‘common sense’ in Tory conference speech.

He said “we shouldn’t get bullied into believing that people can be any sex they want to be, they can’t a man is a man and a woman is a woman that’s just common sense” and the sickophantic seals at the conference applauded!

So Rishi, when you look at me and some of my friends who have been transitioning for a while, what do you see?

His full speech is here: Rishi Sunak’s full speech from Conservative Party Conference in Manchester – Wales Online and if you feel the desire to watch it then thats available here: (341) Rishi Sunak speech on HS2, education reforms and smoking – YouTube

This is for a number of reasons.

The first and main reason is that the transphobic part of our society will now see Rishi Sunak’s speech as carté blanche to now purposely, misgender every trans person that they see.

Sadly, this may involve some cisgender people experiencing hate as well because they maybe perceived as transgender.

I am hoping that this does not happen to me and also that it doesn’t become a common occurrence, but I have made up my mind that if this does happen and I am misgendered, by a professional person, such as a police officer or medical professional, I will stand my ground and fight my corner!

Even if this means that I am arrested for what I do or say thereafter!

If this happens from a member of the general public or even a friend, then I will ignore them quicker than they can click their fingers.

If it’s a work colleague then I will raise this with their HR departments or the person who ultimately pays my wage which is the owner of the company. I would even withdraw my services from this customer if needed!

I know some people may say, “well this is just my opinion”, but in today’s society you would not call a black person a n***** or somebody from the middle East and p**** anymore. So why should a transgender person be expected to take abuse for the same thing?

Nobody knows what I have been through in my life to reach a point where I first of all felt safe, and also felt happy transitioning from male to female. Plus you have no idea of the heartache, anguish, anxiety, soul searching, and mental anguish that I have gone through to get to this stage in my life.

Just so that I can be happy and a functioning member of society!!!

We have the prime minister of the United Kingdom standing on a stage and say anti transgender things in a public forum and saying that being anti transgender is acceptable! This is both morally and societally unacceptable and those that think this is right are perhaps the ones with a mental disorder.

Then on the same day the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Steve Barclay, say that trans people will not be allowed on hotel wards for treatment on the ward of their chosen gender. Meaning that I would not be allowed on a woman’s ward for treatment.

Now I hope that medical professionals see sense here and are not going along with this guidance, as there was already legislation passed in 2021 (NHS guidance issued in 2021 said trans people may be placed on wards according to the gender they identify as.)

As far as I am aware there have been no incidence of transgender people causing issues on the ward of their chosen gender in the past and also placing trans people in private rooms will further strain an already broken NHS.

This poses the question, which ward would I be put in if I was having gender affirming surgery?

The second major reason I no longer feel safe in the UK is because I see the Conservative government becoming more and more fascist in the way that it deals with the general public at large.

These comments by our prime minister and the proposal changes is putting the health and well-being of the transgender population in jeopardy

All of this rhetoric aimed at the transgender community, which I hasten to add is only 0.39% of the entire UK population (2022 census results. Population of 67.33 million and 262000 people identifying as transgender or non-binary). This rhetoric is making it more difficult for people like myself to live our lives.

Also this kind of legislation also puts a strain on our society but it’s also going to impact the lives of non-transgender people as every masculine woman or feminine man is going to be viewed very differently by our society and how long before this abuse spills over to those not viewed as perfect in Rishi’s society?

I honestly do not know what the Tories are trying to achieve by victimizing the transgender community when nearly all the transgender people I know just want to live their lives. Something which the non-transgender community is free to do with impunity.

It is already hard enough to live in this country as a transgender person and I must admit that I have actually looked at moving away from this country to a safer place.

Me moving overseas would not only impact on my life, but it would also impact on the lives of my companies suppliers, subcontractors, customers and even the UK treasury itself, as my business pays tax in the UK.

I am prepared to move overseas if the Transmisia that is appearing in the UK continues and believe me this has not been an easy decision to make because I do love the United Kingdom.

So, I say to Rishi Sunak and the Tory Party that you are a bunch of cunts and you would not have treated any other minorities in the way that you are treating the transgender community today.

Your words are vile and you should know that the harder you push me as a transgender person, the harder I will push back, be that through my activism or if the need arises via criminal actions.

I am honestly no longer scared to be arrested for standing my ground against rules and measures brought in against the transgender community and ultimately myself.

Therefore should I experience any kind of hate on mistreatment from any public body or service I will pursue them to the full extent of my ability and legal recourse.

I will also never again in my life vote Conservative, and I await the day that my local tory MP knocks on my door looking for my support because she, Fiona Bruce, and her supporters will get the metaphoric both barrels.

What was said by the prime minister I find utterly abhorrent and as I’ve said before there is no way that they would have said this to any other minority in this once great country.

You and the Tory party have taken another step closer to a fascist society and shown your true colours! Brown!

Do it 3 times and I’ll distance myself from you so quickly you won’t believe it, and have done on numerous occasions.

I’m four years down the line now and if you see me as I was four years ago then you either don’t care about me, or have some kind of problem with me being transgender.

I don’t do this to be nasty, or to be disrespectful. I do it to protect my own sanity, and my own sanity is more important to me than anyone else’s mental thought processes or inability to see me as what I am now. Basically, see ya later!

If you can’t remember my pronouns, use my name and if you can’t remember my name, try “Hun”, “friend” or even “mate”.

It’s not hard!

Let me ask you a serious question. Can your business afford to ignore the transgender dollar, or transgender pound?

This is a question I keep asking myself, especially when I get stonewalled by businesses because I am transgender.

As many transgender people are generally affluent and have money to spend in businesses, and some businesses choose not to deal with transgender people either because of their beliefs or their prejudices.

Lets take my own “self-care” regime as an example.

When I first started out on my journey nearly four years ago quite a few of the hair salons and nail bars I went to would not deal with, and I quote “a man”

Now, after 4 years and having my nails and hair done every month, that’s 48 months times by £100, for both combined, that’s, give or take, nearly £5,000 your business hasn’t received because of your beliefs or prejudice.

If this is something you can’t put aside then while I commend your resolve, I also wonder what kind of cash flow your business receives.

Maybe the prejudice isn’t just your own, but that of your other clients. Other clients who you think may not give you work because you are dealing with a transgender person in your business.

Again this probably says more about the area your business operates in than your business. It also says a hell of a lot about your clientele, especially if they voice concerns that you are dealing with transgender people.

Over all in my business we don’t discriminate against individuals and we mainly only deal with businesses who are LGBTQ+ friendly as much as possible.

Let’s explain why transmisia should be used, as transphobia is perhaps not the right word for what some people show to the trans community.

Let me explain this.

A phobia, specifically transphobia, is the fear of something, in this case transgender people. Transgender people such as myself and many of my friends.

This is more often than not male to female transgender people, as this is what the media and haters seem to focus on. Typically through their myths and legends which they “think” are gospel!

This fear, phobia or hate is aimed at the way that we, the transgender community, have the audacity to live our lives or because of the misinformation they believe, perceive or have been fed about the this community.

Now, fear is not what is being aimed at the transgender community at the moment.

It’s hate!

The Greek word for hate is -misia, phobia being the Greek word for fear.

Transmisia

Misia is defined as:

From Greek for hate or hatred.

Misia can be appended to minoritised identifiers that are targeted for hate.

So, this brings us to the word transmisia.

Hatred for transgender people or the transgender community.

Therefore, the next time you hear harmful and derogatory terms being aimed at the transgender community remember this isn’t a fear or phobia of transgender people it’s hate of transgender people.

Or Transmisia!

What is the Gender Recognition Act 2004?

The Gender Recognition Act 2004 (GRA) is the primary piece of legislation for and in use in the UK. This legislation governs the recognition of transgender people.

The full act documentation can be found on the government website, here: Gender Recognition Act 2004 (legislation.gov.uk)

The Gender Recognition Act allows transgender people to change their legal gender by applying to the Gender Recognition Panel (GRP) for a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC).

To be eligible to apply for a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC), you must:

Be at least 18 years old

Have lived in the UK for at least two years

Have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria by a qualified medical professional

Have lived in their acquired gender for at least two years

Sounds simple doesn’t it? but the GRA has been criticized for being too restrictive, and there have been calls for reform because the process is both difficult and restrictive. In 2018, the UK government launched a consultation on reforming the GRA. This consultation closed in 2020, and the government is currently considering the responses. However, in the current anti-LGBTQ+ environment this is unlikely to happen.

One of the key proposals to the Gender Recognition Act is to reform the Gender Recognition Act, to allow transgender people to change their legal gender by self-declaration. This would mean that transgender people would no longer need to obtain a medical diagnosis or live in their acquired gender for a certain time.

Another key proposal is to lower the minimum age for applying for a GRC from 18 to 16. This would allow transgender people under the age of 18 to change their legal gender with the consent of their parents or guardians.

The UK government is expected to publish its response to the consultation in 2023. It is not yet clear whether the government will implement these reform proposals.

In addition to the GRA, many other laws in the UK affect transgender people. These include the Equality Act 2010, which prohibits discrimination based on gender reassignment, and the Human Rights Act 1998, which protects the right to private and family life.

The Equality Act 2010 defines gender reassignment as “a person’s gender identity, or the fact that the person has changed, or is planning to change, their gender utilizing medical treatment or surgery.” The Act prohibits discrimination based on gender reassignment in several areas, including employment, education, and housing.

The Human Rights Act 1998 protects the right to private and family life. This right has been interpreted by the courts to include the right of transgender people to live in their acquired gender.

The UK as a whole has made significant progress in terms of transgender rights in recent years. However, there is still more work to be done but this is hampered by the current government’s stance on the Transgender community.

The government’s response to the consultation on reforming the GRA will be a key moment in the fight for transgender rights in the UK. I await the results of the Gender Recognition Act with bated breath!

I’m writing this article as I am a Transgender person and these are the fears of Transgender people in the UK at the moment (May 2023).

These are some of the issues we are now facing as transgender people on a daily basis, and I’ll come onto why below.

First off lets address the internal fears that Transgender people face on a daily basis which can be about their gender identity, their physical appearance, and how they are treated by the government, media and others.

Gender Identity

Most transgender people are trans because the of way they think about themselves, and the body they see.

These two things do not match, and this is called Gender Dysphoria (your mental thoughts do not match your physical body) which leads onto body dysphoria (you do not like the way your body looks to the point of self loathing and in extreme cases, self harm or even suicide).

While most people think transgender people wake up one morning and decide to be trans. What actually happens is we spend years with internal turmoil as we try to be something we are truly not, and we slowly decide to be what we actually are.

Discrimination

definition: the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of ethnicity, age, sex, or disability.

One of the biggest fears that transgender people face is discrimination.

This may be in the form of being denied jobs, housing, or even medical care because of their gender identity.

They may also be harassed or assaulted, simply for being who they are or because they look different to what some people class as the normal. I know this is true of many minorities but lets concentrate on the subject at hand.

Another fear that transgender people are now beginning to face is violence.

Transgender people are more likely to be the victims of violence, including murder, than cisgender people. This violence can come from strangers, family members, or even friends.

Just recently, in the UK, a 16 trans girl called Brianna Ghey was murdered in Warrington by two other teenagers. This is a very severe case but assault and victimisation is on the increase in the UK.

Transgender people also face discrimination because they are misunderstood.

This discrimination might be being afraid of how other people will react when they learn about their gender identity, and this may also mean they keep their gender identity hidden for fear of being rejected, ridiculed or worse!

These fears then may have a significant impact on the mentality and lives of transgender people. They may make it difficult to go to school, get a job, or even mean they don’t want to leave their homes.

These things may also lead to depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems, such as agoraphobia.

It is important to remember that transgender people are just like everyone else, like you and I.

They/we/I, deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. We should all do our part to create a more inclusive and accepting society for transgender people.

Here are some ways to help transgender people:

Use the correct pronouns and name. This really isn’t difficult but some people find it very hard to do!

Educate yourself about transgender issues and help us by learning and understanding what it means to be transgender.

Be an ally to the transgender community by speaking up against discrimination and violence.

Support transgender organizations and businesses.

Donate to organizations that are working to improve the lives of transgender people.

Just by taking these steps, you help to create a world where transgender people can live freely and without fear.

Contrary to popular myths, the transgender community are not, as portrayed in the media, sexual predators, or weirdos. The media seem to think we are there to be ridiculed or abused.

What has caused this rise in transphobia in the UK?

There are a number of factors that have contributed to the rise in transphobia in the UK over the past few years. These include:

The increasing visibility of transgender people in the media and in public life. Actresses, actors, singers, presenters, social commentators, this list grows daily.

The rise of social media, which has made it easier for people to spread transphobic messages and find like-minded individuals.to share their views with.

The election of a Conservative government in 2019, which has rolled back some of the progress that had been made on transgender rights and continue to press for changes to law to prevent Transgender people living their lives.

The current UK government allying themselves with anti transgender organisations. Even giving these organisations a voice at their party conference.

Overturning of laws passed in parts of the UK which would have made Transgender peoples lives easier.

The rise of far-right groups, which often target transgender people with their rhetoric, violence and untruths.

Pushing for changes to the Equility and Human Rights Act to force Transgender people to use the bathroom of the gender written down at birth.

The media spreading misinformation, untruths or highlighting issues purely because the victims or perpetrators are transgender.

This increase in transphobia has had a significant impact on the lives of transgender people in the UK.

They are more likely to experience discrimination, harassment, and violence than cisgender people.

Trans people are also more likely to experience mental health problems because of this.

It is important to remember that transgender people are just like everyone else. As a group we deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. We should all do our part to create a more inclusive and accepting society for not just transgender people BUT for all people, irrespective of sex, colour, creed or sexual preference!

Political

Just this January, 2023, an organisation called, the Council of Europe, placed the UK alongside countries with poor LGBTQ+ rights such as Russia, Hungary and Poland. Countries listed as sites of “extensive and often virulent attacks” against the LGBTQ+ communities.

And then in February, the UK’s own equalities watchdog, the EHRC, was disavowed by the coalition of 19 LGBT+ organisations who called on the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions to revoke the body’s A-rating because of institutional transphobia.

Further to this, in April, the government’s own LGBTQ+ convention, “Safe to Be Me” was cancelled due to it being boycotted over its decision to exclude trans people from its ban on LGBT conversion therapy.

And to top all of this the Equality Act of 2010, which has been helping to protect our rights and lives from discrimination, is said to be changed after recent correspondence between Minister for Women and Equalities, the Rt Hon Kemi Badenoch MP, and the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), suggesting that the UK Government is considering amending the definition of sex in the Equality Act to make it easier to exclude trans people from single-sex spaces.

And let’s not forget that despite Theresa May‘s government promising to “ban conversion therapy” for trans people. This was promised over 5 years ago.

The current Tory government have still to action this and it’s a fear of many of my trans friends that the current government may go back on this promise or fail to action this.

For those who don’t know what conversion therapy is, here’s the Wikipedia description.

Conversion therapy is the pseudoscientific practice of attempting to change an individual’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression to align with heterosexual and cisgender norms.

The Media Bias

From what I’m reading in the mainstream media, it seems that every journalist in the UK has suddenly become an expert on Transgender people, trans matters, our bathroom habits and even our genitals!

Not a week goes by when I don’t read or hear about some article or show where trans people are talked about in the third person and usually in a negative way.

Of course this is read by the general public at large who’s mind set is, it’s in the news, so it must be true!

Also memes of TV mouthpieces fill Social Media channels, and these are again repeated as verbatim truths on peoples social media posts.

There’s also posts from the “Daily tomorrow’s toilet paper” spouting more bile about Transgender people.

I even get posts on my social media feeds containing videos of people posting BS and hate comments about me, my friends and transgender people in my email, social feeds and social messenger.

I know that everyone has their own opinions but sometimes the media takes these opinions as gospel fact and never apologise for mistruths or if they publicly misrepresent a trans person.

Again, lets take the case of Brianna Ghey.

This young trans woman was murdered but the media saw fit, to not only mis-gender her, but then went on to dead name her!

Totally abhorrent behavior from major UK news channels, and not to mention absolutely downright disrespectful.

She had just been murdered and you’re digging into her life!

I hope the same treatment is given to her killers, who couldn’t be named for legal reasons!!!!

The media, in my opinion, is just after the next 10 second soundbite to sell their channel, papers or get ratings.

The way they portray transgender people is a constant issue and is not helped by the way the government go about things.

If you don’t think it’s abhorrent then just repeat what you’ve heard and replace, transgender, with another minority.

The Bathroom debate, or the Elephant in the room, so to speak!

The bathroom debate is should transgender people be allowed to use the bathroom of their chosen sex. When what is meant by this is “Should trans women be allowed to use the women’s bathroom?”. It is totally forgotten that there are Transgender men as well!

The argument is always about safety. As a trans person I have been verbally abused and spat on in women’s bathroom of mainly CIS establishments and physically assaulted when trying to use the male bathroom. Lesser of two evils! Thankfully, many places I frequented when I first started to transition had mixed bathrooms.

The bathroom debate is the standard retort of transphobes, the ill informed and those with an axe to grind. I hear it time and time again about Transgender people. Also trans exclusionary radical feminists put this forward as their basis to deny the existence of Transgender people as their whole argument is to make out that we are some kind of sexual predator because we want to pee!

There is no evidence that transgender people are a danger to others in public bathrooms. In fact, studies have shown that transgender people are more likely to be the victims of violence than the perpetrators. However, this argument continues to be pushed by the media and government as fact!

Transgender women are not a danger to others in public restrooms.

There is no evidence to support the argument that transgender women are more likely to commit sexual assault or other crimes in public restrooms than cisgender women. In fact, studies have shown that transgender people are more likely to be the victims of violence than the perpetrators.

This argument is based on a fear that transgender women pose a danger in public restrooms because of prejudice and misinformation. It is important to remember that transgender women are women, and they deserve to be treated with the same respect and dignity as any other woman.

Transgender women who are on hormone replacement has virtually zero sex drive as the testosterone blockers and estrogen drugs they take have in most cases reduced their libido.

If you are concerned about safety in public restrooms, there are a few things you can do. First, you can educate yourself about transgender people and the issues they face. Second, you can speak out against discrimination and violence against transgender people. Third, you can support organizations that are working to make public restrooms safer for everyone.

It is important to remember that transgender women are not a danger in public restrooms. They are simply women who are trying to live their lives. By working together, we can create a more inclusive and welcoming world for everyone.

Transgender people should be able to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity. This is the safest and most respectful option for everyone involved.

Requiring transgender people to use bathrooms that do not correspond with their gender identity is harmful and discriminatory.

If you’re of the opinion that Trans people should use the bathroom of their biological sex then be prepared for the shock of dealing with Trans men in your women’s bathrooms and trans women in men’s bathroom with your husbands!!!

There are a number of ways to make public bathrooms more inclusive for transgender people. One option is to have gender-neutral bathrooms available. Another option is to have single-stall bathrooms that anyone can use, regardless of their gender identity. I am please to say this is becoming more and more the norm.

It is important to remember that us transgender people are just like everyone else. We deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.

Transgender people make up less than 0.5% of the UK population (for those of you who’s math’s isn’t the best that’s about 336,650).

However, the way this is reported in the media does not reflect this.

You are highly unlikely to be in a bathroom with someone who is transgender unless you frequent places transgender people visit on a regular basis.

Everyone can help to create a more inclusive and welcoming society for all people, not just transgender people, by challenging hate, transphobia and discrimination.

Police attitudes towards transgender people vary widely from county to a county and department to department and even from officer to officer.

Some departments have implemented policies specifically designed to protect transgender people, while others have done little or nothing to address the issue and some are actually transphobic because of a lack of police policies and training.

Attitudes

A 2015 study by the National Center for Transgender Equality found that 40% of transgender people have experienced harassment or discrimination by the police.

The study also found that transgender people are more likely to be stopped and searched by the police than cisgender people, and that they are more likely to be arrested and incarcerated.

There are a number of reasons why police attitudes towards transgender people may be negative. Some police officers may hold negative stereotypes about transgender people, believing that they are more likely to be criminals, sexual deviants/predators or sex workers.

Others may simply be unfamiliar with transgender people and their needs.

Whatever the reason, negative police attitudes towards transgender people can have a serious impact on their lives. Transgender people who are harassed or discriminated against by the police may be less likely to report crimes, and they may be more likely to live in fear of being arrested or incarcerated.

Hate Crimes

The people also do not take hate crimes against transgender people even remotely seriously and despite rules in place to prevent discrimination this just does not happen. Again this can be a county, departmental or individual officer problem but in reporting hate crimes against trans people, there can be little or no action taken against the perpetrators.

There are a number of things that can be done to improve police attitudes towards transgender people. First, it is important for police departments to implement policies specifically designed to protect transgender people. These policies should include training for all officers on transgender issues, and they should establish clear procedures for handling incidents of hate crimes, harassment or discrimination.

Second, it is important for police departments to reach out to transgender communities and build relationships with transgender people. This can help to dispel negative stereotypes and promote understanding.

Finally, it is important for individual officers to be open-minded and respectful of transgender people.

When officers treat transgender people with dignity and respect, it sends a message that transgender people are valued members of society.

I have experienced quite a few anti trans people in the last few years and their opinions are usually centered around religious beliefs, “you are wrong”, “its not the will of god”, “your day of reckoning will come, heathen”, etc.

Usually though, non religious folks entire argument is centered around toilets and Transgender people being sexual deviants, predators or both.

Medical, health care

Let’s be honest here the NHS is an amazing organisation, but in terms of treatments of trans health care, the NHS is stuck in the 1970’s when it comes to trans health care.

It’s mindset is over 50 years old. this goes for it’s attitudes, procedures and practices as well.

One of the biggest issues most transgender people have is dealing with the NHS, is not just for care of service, but care of duty.

Dealing with the NHS is a major source of anxiety and depression for most, and I have commented on this many times after dealing with my own GP.

The waiting list to see a NHS psychotherapist is now over 5 years in length and this is a funding, staffing, training and educational issue. A list of current waiting list times is available on the Gender GP website.

This is compounded because one of the main clinics for transgender people in the UK is broken, the Tavistock clinic. Rather than fix it, our government deem it’s best to close it instead.

This puts pressure on the remaining clinics, as no new ones are coming online to replace it.

There isn’t enough staff to build a meaningful service and the General Medical Council jumps on any private practises which spring up for doing the very same as the NHS provide.

This means that waiting times are long, doctors surgery’s can neither cope with, or understand, the needs of their trans patients and as such the service provided and the way trans patients are deal with is way below par.

Just look how long it took for me to get my doctor’s to change my name on my medical records, nearly 2 and a half years, and they only did that because I sat in the surgery and was very very angry.

Coupled with the way that the NHS is being run into the ground, it is a major worry for the future of trans health care.

The chronic lack of investment and underfunding in all areas of the NHS is evident for all to see, except those with shares on public health care companies!

It’s probably why most trans people choose to use private health care for their transgender care as the NHS is failing in every department.

Summary, the fears of Transgender people

The fears of transgender people are real because society is changing and the way we are viewed is changing.

Our fears are real, and because of it some transgender people are now more anxious about daily life or choose to hide away from society and end up with crippling anxiety, distress or other mental issues.

If you know a trans person, give them your support. If you hear transphobic comments then if safe, react to them, educate those spreading these hateful comments or report them.
