As a transgender person myself, I must admit that I’ve been given the Brianna Ghey murder a lot of thought over the past couple of days, and I’ve actually been quite distraught about it.
The very fact that this young girl has died is terrible but I’m also very angry about the manner in which it was reported by the mainstream media.
For those that don’t know Brianna was murdered in a park in Warrington on Sunday the 12th of February 2023.
Murdered by two 15 year olds.
Stabbed with a knife, in a public park, in broad daylight!
WTF! Seriously!
My heart really goes out to the family of Brianna at this moment in time as I can not even comprehend the pain they must be feeling after the murder of their child.
I know what I think about the murder is immaterial until we know all the facts but I just find it utterly abhorrent that she was killed in the first place.
This is irrespective of the child’s gender which has been the media’s main focus.
I have want to comment about the manner the mainstream media reported Brianna’s death.
First, let’s look at the way that they actually introduced that Brianna have been murdered.
The BBC’s narrative was that a trans girl had been murdered, and this wasn’t a hate crime.
Sky news reported in the same manner that this wasn’t a hate crime and a trans girl have been murdered.
The media even dead named Brianna, calling her by her past name. Sadly this is par for the course with the mainstream media when discussing trans people.
Secondly, a child has been murdered, and it was probably premeditated.
Why are kids carrying knives?
Why is it important for us to know that it’s a trans child?
I dont know the answers to these questions, but dead naming anyone who has changed their name is utterly abhorrent and in my humble opinion should only be relevant if the person being discussed is the perpetrator of a crime while they were their old name!
Whether or not this was a trans boy or a girl is immaterial, a child have been murdered.
Probably murdered because these two teenagers didn’t agree with how Brianna had chosen to live her life.
This is no doubt from opinions gleaned from these children’s parents, the media, society at large, or perhaps a religious view!
Thirsly, not only has Brianna been killed and her family will be out through hell from the loss of their child, but the killers family have also now lost their children!
However, I do not morn for these teenagers or their family but I am saddened that 3 family will not see their teenage children become adults in a proper manner.
It also strikes me that now these teenagers have been charged with the murder of Brianna Ghey they get given anonymity by the courts and press because they are still children. It’s a pity the same anonymity and dignity wasn’t afforded to Brianna or her family, as her life was exposed for the sake of sensationalism and viewers.
The main stream media always do whatever they can to sell their sleazy news publications! Even the BBC which claims, (laughs), to be an impartial broadcaster.
I spoke to a lot of friends about this as Brianna’s murder has hit a nerve not just with the transgender community but also with the public at large, something which hit home to me when I attended the Brianna Ghey vigil in Sackville gardens in central Manchester.
Previous vigils I have attended had maybe 200 to 300 people in attendance but this one was very different with over 2000 people in attendance.
I have never seen so many people in Sackville gardens and I have attended a lot of vigils, rallies, and demonstrations in the gardens.
This was the largest volume of people I have seen in that area of Manchester.
Again, this was really down played by the media who instead of using photographs of the thousands of people in the gardens decided to use close-ups of people and items within the gardens at the time.
They did not even mention the number of people who attended!
Back to the discussions I’ve had with friends who have asked some very searching questions, not just about why they think Brianna was murdered but also about the way the media reported this.
Be these friends, trans, LGBTQ+, CIS or otherwise they are all disgusted about the treatment of Brianna.
I fear this may not be the last Trans murder before the year’s end because of the direction the UK is going with its anti trans rhetoric, something I’ve experiencing more in the past 6 months than previous 3 years.
Trans gender people have been around since before the bible was written, we just want to be left alone to live our lives in peace and the harder society pushes us, the harder we will push back.
If there is one thing I’ve done this year because of all the anti trans rhetoric is to be more proactive in the trans community and I will continue to do so as long as I am pushed by government, the media, and society at large.
RIP Brianna
